Ok, this is disturbing, even for HIM. A graphic retelling of an incestuous rape/molestation by his step-father is a bit much. Killing people and wearing their skin as suits? What is wrong with this guy? Why is he still picking on Christopher Reeves? That dude’s been dead for months now. Did he just say he wants to perform a home abortion and dig the fetus out with a wire hanger and eat it? Ok, that’s it… Eminem has lost it. He’s back in his “Slim Shady” splendor conveying the most disturbing controversial concepts only his twisted mine can create. Where “The Marshall Mathers LP” was more of an exploration into who Eminem was, and “The Eminem Show” was a diagram outlining his political views, “Relapse” heavily relies on shock value. It’s too early to determine where this album ranks among the rest of his catalog, but as a stand alone album the early returns say that this album is a strong B+. Over time, this album will undoubtedly appreciate and solidify itself as “classic” status. Aside from the unsettling subject matter, his wordplay alone makes this album worth listening to. While its to be expected because of the difference of genre “Relapse” is a far cry from the “Stanky Leg” and “Ricky Bobby”-esque “songs” that we are being force fed by radio. It’s refreshing… Ok maybe not refreshing, but it feels good to hear something other than instructional “Hokey Pokey” songs post 2004. True Eminem fans will be at least satisfied with “Relapse”. For the rest of you, I can’t promise what you should expect. As always, cop the album and form your own opinions.
